Madden & Finucane Solicitors has successfully secured a five-figure settlement on behalf of a client who brought a medical negligence claim against Dr Michael Watt, the consultant neurologist at the centre of Northern Ireland’s biggest-ever patient recall.

Our client suffered psychiatric and medical injuries as a result of a misdiagnosis during her consultation and subsequent treatment by Dr Watt. Following a thorough investigation into the circumstances of her care, our specialist team pursued a claim to ensure she received the recognition and compensation she deserved.

Dr Watt, formerly a consultant neurologist at the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, was at the centre of a major patient safety scandal that came to light in 2018. Concerns about his clinical practice led to a recall of approximately 3,000 patients. He has since been banned from practising medicine in the United Kingdom.

The settlement secured by Madden & Finucane covers our client’s psychiatric and medical injuries sustained during the consultation and treatment period.

Solicitor Lynn Day, who had carriage of the case, commented: “We are pleased to have secured this sum for our client. While no amount of money can undo the trauma, this settlement provides her with the closure and compensation she rightfully deserves.”
