Bloody Sunday Case

Ciaran Shiels, solicitor for the Bloody Sunday Families and Wounded gave an initial reaction to the decision:

"This decision sees the final 8 Paratroopers who perjured themselves and perverted the course of justice in relation to Bloody Sunday escape criminal prosecution for their actions.

"Former members of the British Military have nothing to fear in relation being held accountable either for murders they committed with impunity in Ireland, or when they subsequently came to lie under oath when seeking to justify the unjustifiable, or when alleging that the innocent victims they murdered were engaged in criminal activity and that they effectively deserved to be shot.

"This decision makes it clear beyond doubt that when British Soldiers brazenly perjure themselves and pervert the course of justice in providing entirely untruthful and dishonest evidence in 1972 and in 2003, in order to cover up their murderous and criminal activity, before two Law Lords and an International Panel of Judges, The Public Prosecution Service in Northern Ireland will ensure that justice for victims will continue to be denied."
