Martin McCauley voluntarily presented himself to An Garda Síochána this morning and was handed over to the PSNI and brought to Craigavon Court where he was charged with the murders of three police officers following an explosion at Kinnego Embankment near Lurgan in October 1982. Following a cross examination of a PSNI Detective Inspector and legal submissions by Andrew Moriarty BL, the Court rejected all of the grounds of objection to bail relied upon by police.
Martin McCauley’s solicitor, Fearghal Shiels of Madden & Finucane said:
“The PSNI had closed its mind to bail without taking into account any of Mr McCauley’s personal circumstances, including his employment, health and firm family ties within the south of Ireland.
“Its objections to bail were manifestly ill conceived and without any proper evidential basis.
“We are pleased that the Court agreed that the proper course was to release Mr McCauley on bail and he looks forward to returning north to defend himself against these allegations that he vehemently denies.”
