Joe Campbell Inquest

Joe Campbell was murdered in Cushendall, Co. Antrim on 25 February 1977 as he locked the gates of the local police station where he had been stationed since 1963. In 1982 an RUC Special Branch officer was acquitted of Joe Campbell’s murder. It has been established that senior police, up to at least the level of Assistant Chief Constable were aware of a serious threat to Joe Campbell’s life yet took no steps to prevent his murder. Credible evidence has since emerged that a combination of RUC Special Branch, Military Intelligence and police informer and notorious killer Robin Jackson were responsible for Joe Campbell’s murder. Today the presiding Coroner will consider when an inquest, ordered by the Attorney General in 2015, may be listed for hearing.
