Yesterday at Sarita Colonia prison in Lima, Michaella McCollum was interviewed by the investigating judge. She accepted the charges. It was a short hearing and the judge put the case back for sentencing. This will take place next Tuesday 1 October 2013. A full transcript of yesterday’s hearing should be available next Tuesday, if not before. The judge may allow press and media to attend the sentencing hearing and the court will convey the judge’s view about this.
In view of the fact that the Peruvian justice system, at this stage of the ongoing process, does not usually permit the legal representatives to disclose what was said at yesterday’s hearing, I will be making no further statement about yesterdays hearing until after the sentencing hearing next week.
Peter Madden said, “I intend to travel to Lima next week to attend the sentencing hearing and after the sentence is handed down by the judge, it will be possible make further comment.”
